– Greater focus on players this season as six clubs added to pool
The Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Elite League Season III is scheduled to kick off on Sunday, at the National Track and Field Centre Leonora with an expanded league and a greater emphasis on player-oriented initiatives.
The new season will see six of the top clubs added to the pool of elite teams following their receipt of their respective CONCACAF Club licences in September 2017 including Western
Tigers FC, Cougars FC, New Amsterdam United FC, Ann’s Grove FC, Den Amstel FC and
Milerock FC.
According to Ian Alves, Competitions Director of the GFF, the players will be the primary focus of the league: “This time around the league is more player-centred than ever before. As a result, the players’ match fees have been increased. Players will be provided with an accreditation (pass) that allows them and one other entry into any elite league match venue whether playing or not on the day. It also allows them entry to all GFF-hosted international matches. Additionally, meals will be provided on match day for each player and coaching staff for the clubs participating on that day. Clubs have also been asked to insure their players, a process with which the GFF has facilitated with the insurance provider.”
Alves, who said the GFF is looking forward to a competitive season with the additional clubs and incentives, said the players also have a responsibility to ensure this is realized: “In return, players have been asked to bring their best game on each match day in order to make the league attractive to the fans. We therefore urge club supporters and football fans in general to come out and experience Guyana’s highest level of football as we continue to grow and develop the league towards self-sustenance in the near future.”
Additionally, there will be prizes for the Golden Boot, Golden Glove and Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The opening double-header will feature Fruta Conquerors FC vs New Amsterdam FC and GDF
FC vs Western Tigers FC at 17:30hrs and 20:00hrs respectively following a grand opening ceremony scheduled for 15:00hrs.
Among the prizes up for grabs for the season’s winners are five million dollars for the winner; two million dollars for the second-placed team; one million dollars for the third-placed team and five hundred thousand dollars for the fourth-placed team.
All games will attract a five hundred dollars ($500.00) entry fee.
