Authorities have announced changing of times for the operations of speedboats.
As of Wednesday, November 8th, 2017, according to the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), all water taxis will only be allowed to operate for 12 hours.
“With effect from November 8th, 2017, all water taxis (with/without sheds) that are engaged in ferrying passengers will be allowed to operate only during 05:30hrs-17:30hrs,” MARAD said in a notice published in Kaieteur News.”
However, taxis that ferry passengers in the Demerara River between Georgetown and the Vreed-en-Hoop are permitted to operate during 05:30hrs-20:00hrs.
“This operating time will be in effect, until otherwise amended by the Maritime Administration Department. Failure to comply with the above instruction can lead to immediate revocation of operating licences,” MARAD said.
Officials have been promising to clampdown on speedboat operations after a number of deadly accidents in recent years. There have been improvements also with vessels now covered with sheds to prevent passengers from getting wet.
The affected areas from the time change will be the Parika and Supenaam route, the Parika to Bartica route and the Pomeroon River area.
