Quality testing critical to improved patient care

–Local health officials highlight at scientific conference

Accurate testing and precise data can lead to the correct diagnosis and improved patient care. This was the assertion of Ministry of Public Health Officials, who attended the recently concluded Biennial General Meeting at the delegates of the Caribbean Association of Medical Technologists (CASMET).

The meeting, held in Guyana for the first time, was hosted by the Government in association with CASMET.
The conference provided a unique opportunity for interfacing and benefitting from the expertise of this distinguished body of Medical Laboratory Professionals coming from all over the world.
Addressing participants at the opening of the Conference, Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence noted that the Health Sector acknowledged the invaluable contribution that Guyana’s medical technologists have and continue to make to the health sector and more particularly to the delivery of quality health care in the Region and further afield.
She noted that chairperson of the event, Mr. Nolan Hawke, revealed that 70% of clinical laboratory results are used to guide physicians in patient management.
“So, it is therefore fitting and in our interest as a Region, to give full support to promoting the field of Medical Technology, whose objectives focus on discovering new methods and updated technology to provide faster and more accurate testing.
“It is my contention that this will not only impact on emergency situations, but will ultimately enhance patient care, and assist our respective Ministries in fulfilling the mandate of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals,” the Minister had outlined.
She noted too that the theme of the meeting ‘championing quality health care behind the scenes in the 21st century’ was extremely apt, “for it is only through your input that quality results can be had”.
“And so I encourage you to continue broadening the scope of your educational outreach so that our Regional Medical Technologists can benefit from current evidence-based data that will enhance responses to emerging and re-emerging medical issues and thereby assist in the provision of quality health care. “
Lawrence said that it is important for associations such as CASMET to continue to expand, utilizing the experiences and expertise of its members to create a sustainable health environment for future generations.
