A man who told the court that he snatched a phone from a woman because he was hungry, was spared jail time yesterday and sentenced to six months community service after he pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge.
Thirty seven-year-old Simon Persaud, a labourer of Plaisance, appeared before Senior Magistrate, Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on October 30 at Avenue of the Republic, he stole one Samsung J7 valued at $60,000 from Adia Asgar.
When given a chance to address the court, the man said that he was hungry and he decided to go on the road and snatch a phone in order to sell it and purchase something to eat.
“Is the first time, I snatch a phone. I so stupid, I snatch the phone and running with the phone in my hand. The officers chase behind me and they catch me with the phone.”
The man went on to tell the court that he was very hungry since he had not eaten for days and he was advised by some friends to snatch a phone.
“I do not want to go to jail; is a stupid mistake I mek. When the police locked me up, I was among a set of big criminals. Them men told me that they get lock-up for gun and all kind bad things. I would never snatch another phone. I would never snatch anything from anyone because I don’t want to go to jail. If I hungry, I rather go and beg than to steal.”
The virtual complainant then stood before the magistrate and asked that she be lenient with Persaud.
The magistrate told the court that based on the fact that it is the first time Persaud committed such an offence and that he has never been charge before, she would not send him to jail.
The father of one was instructed to perform six months of community service at the Brickdam Police Station.
