Twelve Secondary schools in Region Six, Berbice participated in an Impromptu Speech Competition on Tuesday. The activity was planned by the Region Six Department of Education, as part of Education Month Activities 2017.
Some of the schools that competed were Black Bush Secondary, Central Corentyne, Vryman’s Erven Secondary, Berbice Educational Institute, Skeldon Line Path Secondary, New Amsterdam Secondary, J.C. Chandisingh, and Corentyne Comprehensive.
Each contestant had one minute to confer with his team, and three minutes to speak on a given topic. They were judged in the areas of fluency, interpretation of the topic, poise, utilisation of time and development of the topic. Points were awarded to the speakers in each of those areas.
In presenting the judges’ decision, after the one round competition, Chief Judge, Ms. Simone Dainty announced, that Ronetta Cort, of New Amsterdam Secondary school was the winner. Felisha Indardat of Corentyne Comprehensive secured the runner-up position and Latoya Bethune of J.C. Chandisingh gained the third spot.
Ronetta Cort, presented on the topic, “What can the business sector do to help students stay in school” while Felisha Indardat, spoke on “What I like most about my school.”
The students were awarded trophies for their achievements.
