Initiative launched for Guyanese to connect with Irma-hit families

Guyanese who are interested in being informed on their relatives who reside in countries affected by Hurricane Irma can now do so as a result of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) who collaborated with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).
Those who have since not communicated with their relatives can do so by making enquires via the hotline numbers: 226-1027, 226-1114, 226-1117, 600-7500 or 623-1700.
Last Monday, the Government of Guyana pledged an initial sum of US$50,000 to aid urgent relief efforts through the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) regional mechanism, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), in partnership with the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). Further assistance will be determined subsequent to the completion of a Needs Assessment.
Head of the Ministerial Task Force, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo will be responsible for oversight of the efforts of the Civil Defence Commission’s (CDC) National Risk Reduction Platform, which has since been activated, has pledged that strenuous efforts will be made to keep an open line of communication to ensure that relatives of those residing in hurricane-hit zones are provided with the necessary information regarding their loved ones.
Additionally, the Western Union Company, a global payment service, announced that agents in St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, and Dominica are currently open and available for those wishing to send or pick-up cash.
The company disclosed that during the period of September 9-15, free money transfer services will be offered to money transfers to Antigua and Barbuda, when sending from selected Western Union Agents across the globe and via WU.com as well as when using the Western Union mobile app where available.
The Western Union Company and the Western Union Foundation have committed US$100,000 to the Red Cross to support relief efforts from Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean and the US. The Western Union Foundation will also provide a 1:1 match of qualifying contributions from participating Western Union Agents and a 2:1 match from contributions made by Western Union employees.

Also, customers can make fee-free donations at selected Western Union Agent locations in the US can donate directly to the American Red Cross. To donate, complete the blue Payments section on the Western Union form, using “American Red Cross” as the Pay To recipient; “REDCROSS DC” as the Code City, along with “Hurricane Irma Relief” in the Account field.
Western Union Foundation Executive Director Elizabeth Roscoe said, “Our thoughts are with the people across the regions impacted by this tragedy.”
She added, “The immediate response resulting from collaboration between Western Union, participating Caribbean Agents, and The Western Union Foundation will help the area with immediate needs, recovery and ultimately rebuilding efforts.”
Grace Kennedy Group CEO, Don Wehby disclosed, “News reports are describing Hurricane Irma as the worst and most expensive natural disaster in Caribbean history. We are acutely aware that the recovery is going to last many years but are confident that the true resilience of our people will allow for smooth transition to achieve a new normal.
