A 23-year-old former policeman was yesterday convicted on charges of robbery under-arms and robbery with aggravation, and jailed for two years and 18 months, respectively.
Edwin Nunes, of 32 West Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, was found guilty of robbing Dimitri Charles of two silver rings, one silver chain and other items valuing $45,000, while he was armed with a knife on July 18, at Campbellville, Georgetown. He was jailed for two years on this charge.
Further, Nunes was convicted for robbing Parmanand Harrilall of a cellular phone and a SIM card among other items, all totalling $19,300, on the same day. He was jailed for 18 months on this charge.
The custodial sentences which will run concurrently were handed down by City Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
During his ruling, Bess pointed out that he relied heavily on the victims’ evidence, which was credible and clear. According to the Magistrate, Charles and Harrilall were both able to identify the person who robbed them, since the robberies lasted for a while and the areas in which they occurred had lights.
When asked if he had anything to say in mitigation, Nunes begged for leniency, and said that he respected the decision of the court. Before handing down the sentences, Magistrate Bess took into consideration that Nunes is a young man who can be reformed into society.
The Magistrate also said that he took into consideration the population of the Camp Street and Lusignan Prisons.
According to information, on the day in question at about 12:20 hrs, Charles was walking north along Sheriff Street, when Nunes came out of a yard with an abandoned building, and pointed a knife at him and told him to hand over his valuables. Nunes then made good his escape with the man’s jewellery.
The court heard that on the same day, Harrilall was about to enter his vehicle when Nunes, who was dressed as a woman, approached him and asked to be taken to a bar on Sheriff Street.
According to information, when Nunes got into the vehicle, he took out a knife from under the dress he was wearing and ordered the victim to hand over his valuables.
Harrilall, being fearful for his life, handed over his cellular phone and Nunes made good his escape.
Both victims went to the Kitty Police Station where reports were made. Nunes was subsequently arrested.
The victims and Nunes then had a confrontation at the police station where Nunes was positively identified as the man who robbed them.
Police Lance Corporal Christopher Morris presented the cases on behalf of the state.
