A 24-year-old tailor and graduate of the Government Technical Institute has been released on $300,000 bail over a fatal accident in which he allegedly drove over the head of a drunken man, who was lying on the road.
Ryan Seecharran, of Lot 361 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on June 24, at Third Street, Herstelling, he drove motorcar PVV 4911, in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Kalicharran Goordial.
The 49-year-old victim was said to have been intoxicated and was lying on the roadway when he met his demise. Reports are that after killing Goordial, the driver drove to a wash bay.
It was when he was returning home that an eyewitness pointed him out to traffic ranks at the scene.
He was nabbed and taken to the Providence Police Station where his vehicle was impounded.
The Guyana Police Force in a release said that Goordial, of Creek Dam, Herstelling, was heavily under the influence of alcohol and was lying in the centre of a cross street with his head about five feet from the edge of the road.
An eyewitness reported that the driver was proceeding east along the centre of the street when he suddenly turned left (north) and drove over the man’s head.
When the driver observed what had happened, he reportedly reversed on the victim’s head and fled the scene.
In addition, Seecharran denied that on the same day, he was the driver of the motorcar when an accident occurred whereby injuries were caused to Goordial, and that he failed to stop the vehicle.
Seecharran also denied that on the same day having been involved in an accident whereby injuries were caused to Goordial, he failed to render assistance by taking the injured to a registered medical practitioner.
He was released on $5,000 bail on each of the latter matters which were transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for September 11.
In relation to the causing death by dangerous driving matter, Seecharran was instructed to return before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on September 13.
Attorney-at-Law Glenn Hanoman who represented Seecharran disclosed that he was released on $100,000 station bail pending investigations in the matter.
According to Hanoman, his client has reported in excess of 20 times to the Providence Police Station.
Meanwhile, in another matter, a 48-year-old businessman was also released on $300,000 bail on a causing death by dangerous driving charge.
Tarrachandran Persaud, a rice famer, of Republic Park, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on June 1, at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, he drove motorcar PVV 6494, in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Junior Lakeram.
Attorney-at-Law George Thomas, who represented Persaud, petitioned for him to be released on reasonable bail since he was released on station bail pending investigations in the matter.
Thomas reassured the court that his client will return for trial. Persaud has to make another court appearance on September 18. Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore made no objections to bail for Seecharran and Persaud.
