Dear Editor,
Under a different legal name I wrote this letter about the radio monopoly which was printed on 2 June 2008:”The government should give up the radio monopoly” While I can understand the reasons why the governing PPP/C would want to keep hold of the radio monopoly in Guyana it is imperative that President Jagdeo free the radio spectrum. Hanging onto the radio monopoly makes it look as if the President is afraid, and as if the governing party needs to control and to broadcast propaganda.
With the President’s ideal of justice I believe that he needs to do the right thing, as he should have done in April/May 2001. Making the radio a free medium is essential for creating better institutions than the ones the present government inherited, and I do like the idea that there will be more free media in Guyana able to do investigative reporting. Freeing the radio would not hurt the President in any way because his time in office will be up in 2011, so he has nothing to lose. It is a fallacy to think that the government needs the monopoly; they are scared about what might happen as opposed to what is actually happening.”Today, I can ask the same question to President David Granger “What are you afraid of in privatising NCN and Guyana Chronicle?”
