A fisherman will spend 12 months in prison after he admitted to two armed robbery charges.
Thirty-one-year-old Asid Mohamed of Soesdyke Linden Highway appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Mohamed pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on August 12 at Kingston Georgetown while being armed with a cutlass and knife he robbed Dominique Etwaroo of a cellular phone valued $40,000 and a computer tablet valued $20,000.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question he robbed Daniel Grey of one cellular phone valued $29,000.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Simone Payne stated that on the day in question, the victims were at the Kingston Seawall relaxing when the accused approached them from behind armed with a cutlass and knife and told them to hand over their valuables.
The victims being fearful for their lives handed over their cellular phones to the accused.
The court heard that an alarm was raised by the victims and the accused was apprehended by a police officer, who relieved him of the stolen articles and took him to the station.
Mohamed admitted in a caution statement to committing both offences.
When given a chance to address the court the accused said “Look, I had a problem with my wife. We had a big argument and I was frustrated so I went to Georgetown and I robbed these people to ease my head and ease the stress. I am begging you to be lenient with me.”
The magistrate sentenced Mohamed to 12 months imprisonment on each charge, citing that the accused had pleaded guilty on his first appearance and did not waste the court time. Both sentences will run concurrently.
