The body of 19-year-old Esther Weekes of Burnham Drive, Silvertown, Wismar,
Linden, was yesterday afternoon retrieved from the Demerara River, about quarter of a mile from the spot where she had disappeared three days ago. At the time of the incident she had been in the company of a young relative.
Weekes was a former student of the Wismar Christianburg Secondary School. She was the eldest of four children for her mother Teshira Weekes.
Yesterday’s discovery was greeted by loud wailing and anguished cries by relatives who had reportedly been scouring the river for her body before the break of dawn.
According to reports, Weekes had been cavorting by the Burnham Drive riverside with a younger relative on Sunday last when tragedy struck.
A subsequent search of the area where she was last seen was launched, but this proved futile.
Reports indicate that prior to the incident on Sunday, Weekes was in the company of an aunt and her eleven year old son. Weekes was reportedly warned about going to the river to swim, but she failed to heed the advice.
