Dear Editor,
I write from a perplexed position in respect to a charge put to the Member of Parliament of Region Ten, Jermaine Figueira the only youth in the National Assembly. It is not in any way to suggest that anyone is above the law and youth is an excuse, but rather to put things into perspective and to ask a number of questions.
Firstly this youth is arguably one of the best freshman back bench debater in the Parliament. He is the most visible parliamentarian in Region Ten who gets things done and more over, one who grounds with the people. People in the community I would say forget that Region has three MPs. If one is to do “a man on the street” in Linden with regards to likeability of the political figures in the township and region, hands down MP Figueira would stand alone.
This youngster I can remember vividly in May of this year hosted one of the biggest distribution event in Linden that catered for over six to seven hundred people. They all received food stuff, clothing, shoes, household appliances and also receive the services of our First Lady Mrs Sandra Granger and Hon Minister Amna Ally. All of this; compliments of MP Figueira and his altruistic partner Mrs Eslene Shockley of Caring For Others Organization. In June he promoted a Father’s Day football competition where he also distributed hundreds of quality leather crafted designer shoes and suits to fathers in attendance. I can continue to list Mr Editor, many other remarkable things this youth MP has done for his people and Region.
As I pen this letter Mr editor, I am seeing on Facebook another project this youngster did for the people of his community where he conducted a skilled training program (tie-dying, fabric painting and candle making) for several community groups within the community. Most recently on Emancipation Day August 1st, while all of the other regional leaders may have been out of town or otherwise celebrating their emancipation, the young MP organized a grand exhibition and cook-up competition in front of the Wismar market, which happened to be the only emancipation activity that took place within the township on that day.
The question many in the community are asking is how come this MP finds himself in controversy. They have their speculations and it points to sources within the establishment’s political structure. Mr editor, the charge (playing music without a permit and disturbing the peace) to my knowledge stemmed from an event that formed part of beverage giant Ansa McAl Trading Ltd. country wide “Stag Beer Man Toys” promotion, which was kept at the MP’s father’s premises, so clearly Mr. Editor the charge was misdirected, first of all because it was not the MP’s activity and secondly because it was not kept at his premises but rather his father’s. The music that was played, I was made to understand was also procured by Ansa McAl Trading Ltd. too. So why would the police institute a charge so minuscule to a government MP in a region without first seeking proper advise? Who would the police call first in the region? Would this have happen under the PPP Administration?
Why was this charge administered? Is he doing too much, is he gaining too much love and acceptance from the people? Do the people of this region know if their MP is found guilty, he will be constitutionally required to vacate his seat in parliament? Is this the intention of this political gamesmanship by those involved? To the Young MP Mr Jermaine Figueira, learn that political world is cruel and brutish, but keep doing the good work you are doing for your people and region.
