A 43-year-old mason was shot to the right thigh yesterday after a security guard’s gun accidentally went off at the construction site at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara (ECD) where the Trinidadian-based Movie Towne is being erected.
The wounded man has been identified as Leon Moore of 147 South Betterhope, East Coast Demerara. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and will undergo surgery to remove the bullet. The security guard is presently in police custody.
According to information received, Moore and the security guard both work for the same company. The duo was reportedly communicating when the security took out his weapon and began cleaning it.
Kaieteur News was informed that after cleaning the weapon, the guard forgot to put on the safety on the gun which he rested on his lap as he continued talking to Moore. The weapon subsequently went off. Moore allegedly told the police that he and the guard were talking when he heard a loud explosion and then saw blood running from his thigh.
He also told the cops that the security guard did not aim the weapon at him and that it simply went off by accident.
Investigations are ongoing.
