Brazilian doctor is final witness in Babita Sarjou murder PI

Renato Teodoro Ferreira Paranaibo, a Brazilian doctor, is said to be the final witness in the Babita Sarjou murder Preliminary Inquiry (PI).
The matter continued yesterday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where the doctor continued giving his evidence via Skype video call with the aid of a Portuguese interpreter.
Sarjou’s ex-husband, Sharnandand Narine, called ‘Anand’ of 51 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, and Darel Ponton called ‘Yankee’ of 54 Broad Street, Charlestown, are currently on remand for the woman’s murder.
Paranaibo is a Brazilian Forensic Genetics Expert, who worked at the National Institute of Criminalistics, Brazilian Federal Police since 2003. His testimony is based upon the DNA analysis from the remains of Sarjou, which was sent to Brazil to be tested.
Attorneys Ronald Trotman and Hubert Rodney, who are representing the defendants, yesterday made submissions to block the Brazilian Doctor from testifying, citing that he was giving his testimony via Skype and he was not in court.
Chief Magistrate McLennan then adjourned the matter until July 27, when Police Inspector Gordon Mansfield is expected to reply to the lawyers’ submissions on that day. Babita Sarjou went missing on November 4, 2010 after she left her Timehri, East Bank Demerara home, informing her mother that she was going to meet with her husband, Narine, and son at the Kitty Seawall to view the annual Diwali motorcade.
When she did not return home that night, her mother became worried and filed a missing person’s report.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum and a team of detectives were able to crack the case on May 22, 2016, after they spent over five hours digging up a site at Sharnandand Naraine’s home, where they found Sarjou’s skeletal remains.
