A 24-year-old man who is awaiting trial at the High Court for attempted murder was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of Tedroy Neil James, the mini-bus driver who was shot and killed by bandits on July 11, last.
Orryn Peters of Bagotsown, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The charge against him alleged that on July 11, last, at McDoom, East Bank Demerara he murdered James, of Suddie, Essequibo Coast, during the course of a robbery.
According to reports, James, 38, was driving route 32 minibus BTT 976 north along the East Bank Demerara Public road – presumably heading to Georgetown – when he was instructed by a male passenger whom he had picked up on the West Coast Demerara, to stop at Middle Street, Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara.
As the passenger was about to disembark the vehicle, two male suspects, one armed with a handgun, pounced on the other unsuspecting passengers and began to rob them. James upon noticing the ruckus, attempted to drive away, apparently to create some distance between the robbers and his passengers.
The father of two was fatally shot by one of the men in the process.
The suspects then made good their escape by hopping the median before running into a nearby street. Public-spirited citizens subsequently took James to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Peters, who was unrepresented by an Attorney-at-Law, was instructed to return to court on August 11.
Peters and Curtis Vasconcellos of Remus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara were committed to stand trial at the High Court in Georgetown last September for attempted murder. It is alleged that on June 6, 2015 at Grove, East Bank Demerara, they discharged a loaded firearm at businessman, Neezam Khan, with intent to commit murder.
According to reports, the businessman and his colleagues were outside a snackette of which Khan is the proprietor, when four young men, two of whom are believed to be Vasconcellos and Peters, rode up on motorcycles.
It was reported that one of the men who was armed with a handgun, held up Khan and relieved him of jewellery before shooting him to the left arm. However, this newspaper understands that before the bandits could have escaped with the loot, Khan opened fire on them, killing their accomplice, Michael Grant, formerly of Agricola.
It was reported that Vasconcellos was also injured during the shootout. He reportedly made attempts to escape from the scene but was later found lying a short distance away.
