Director of Prisons (ag.), Gladwin Samuels, and Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, speaking with
injured Prison Warden, Hubert Trim, at GPHC yesterday.
Hubert Trim, the prison warden who ended up in hospital following Sunday’s fire at the Camp Street jail is improving, but not fully out of the danger zone.
Yesterday, Minister within the Ministry of Public Health Dr. Karen Cummings and Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels visited the injured Trim at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Trim is among the seven prison officials who were injured following Sunday’s fire that razed the Georgetown Prison on Camp Street.
Minister Cummings said that Trim has vastly improved since the incident on Sunday.
“There was severe injury at his wrist and lower part of his upper extremity, there was also a skull fracture, he has injury to part of the femur just above the knee,” the Minister told the Department of Public Information (DPI) of the injuries suffered by Trim.
She said that while Trim is “conscious and stable,” he is “not really out of the woods.”
She explained that Trim is set to be transferred to the High Dependency Unit soon for further treatment.
Director of Prisons (ag), Gladwin Samuels, was also happy with the progress that Trim has been making.
“Based on the reports I received, I am quite happy, more so knowing he is conscious,” Samuels said.
“He (Trim) has given clear indication that there has been a significant improvement in terms of his ability to feel and move his hands and so on.”
Director Samuels said that he did not enquire about the incident on Sunday at the prison, because, “I believe because of his state of recovery, that might be pushing too much pressure on him at this early stage.”
Samuels gave his commitment that the Prison Service will aid Trim and his family throughout the process of his recuperation.
Inmates of the Georgetown prison set fire to the Camp Street facility on Sunday.
Trim is one of the several prison officers who was hospitalised with gunshot and chop wounds. One prison officer, Odinga Wickham, died, while receiving medical attention.
