The Hamilton Green Cup Knockout Football tournament will kick off tomorrow
with a double-header at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground in Linden starting from 7:00pm and fans in the Mining Town have been promised a treat.
In what promises to be an exciting tournament, 24 teams will battle for attractive prizes which include $500,000 and trophy for the winner, $250,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively for the other top three finishers. A number of the country’s leading players would be on show and fans should be provided with plenty of entertaining action.
The MVP will receive the Prime Minister’s Trophy; the Best Goalkeeper collects the Sterling Products Trophy, while winners will be presented with Hampers from Ricks and Sari products.
No team from Linden have ever won the tournament when it was played under the Mayor’s Cup handle and now would be an opportune time for the Lindeners to rise to the challenge and stake a claim for the accolade.
The previous winners include Pele, Camptown, Alpha, Western Tigers, Conquerors, Victoria Kings, Santos, Slingerz and Police.
Four nights of the tournament have been slated for the MSC ground in Linden starting with opening night tomorrow.
Home side Milerock will open their account against Kuru Kururu from 19:00hrs, while Silver Shattas, also of Linden face-off with Soesdyke from 21:00hrs. More action has been fixed for the Mining Town on July 26, 28 and August 18.
After opening night, action continues on Sunday July 16 at the Victoria ground on the East Coast of Demerara with three games starting at 4:00pm. Golden Grove face Riddim Squad, Mahaicony tackle Grove Hi Tech and Buxton Bakewell battle Pele.
When the first whistle is blown for the opening game tomorrow, Mile Rock will look to Striker Kevin Beaton up front, while the trio of mid-fielders Denzel Fordice, Nelon Walcott and Lorenzo Miller will be heavily depended on to produce good performances. Custodian Jonathon Copeland will be between the uprights and will hope that defender Oswald Benjamin has a good evening.
Kuru Kururu on the other hand will pin their hopes on talented Strikers Micheal Charles and Cordel Johnson with support in the mid-field from Kester Alleyne and Kester Fraser. Goal Keeper Joshua George and defender Cojio Sitholie will hope Kuru Kururu does not concede Goals.
The second game on the opening night will see Silver Shattas depending on Kellon Major in Goal, Mid-Fielders Michael Wilson and Dexter Garraway along with Striker Damion Wilson to fire them to victory over Soesdyke who will have in their line-up mid fielders Marvin Joseph and Kelson Benson along with defender Dorwin Batson.
Among the sponsors lending valuable corporate support so far are: The Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports, Macorp, BEV Processors, IPA, Techno Mills, Alfro Alphonso, E-Networks, TCL, Dennis Edwards and the Sparta family, EC Vieira, Ready Mix, Col Larry London, BK International, Tent City and Clive Bharatt.
The final of the tournament, which has been sanctioned by the GFF, is fixed for Sunday August 27 at Leonora Sports Facility.
