An intoxicated man drowned Saturday night while trying to save his eight-year-old son after the make-shift boat they were in capsized in a trench at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The dead man has been identified as 36-year-old Rajesh Kachari, a cane harvester and a father of five of LBI. According to reports, Kachari had set his seine earlier in the day and had returned in the afternoon to check whether there were any fish on the net.
Kaieteur News was informed that the father of five used an old refrigerator to go out in the water—it was the same make-shift boat he used earlier that day.
While at the centre of the water, the refrigerator reportedly capsized and the eight-year-old fell into the water. The Cane harvester reportedly jumped into the water to save his son. Someone who witnessed the incident jumped in the water and saved the little boy.
By this time, Kachari already went down in the water and was not seen until other persons joined in to look for him. He was already dead when his body was pulled from the water.
