After throwing himself at the mercy of the Court, Herman George, of Port Kaituma, Region One, was jailed for 11 years for killing his uncle.
The incident occurred at Port Kaituma on March 31, 2012. The sentence was handed down by Justice Navindra Singh at the Georgetown High Court.
The case came up for the first time before Justice Singh at the High Court, and George opted to plea to the lesser count of manslaughter.
The plea was accepted after the Court verified that the accused was sure that he wanted to plea. Standing in the prisoner’s dock, George told the court that he had decided to plead to the lesser count after discussing the issue with his lawyer, Mark Conway.
As such, Justice Singh said that the plea for manslaughter will be accepted by the Court. In his submission, the lawyer told the court, that the accused was just 16 years old at the time the incident occurred.
He had ventured into the interior seeking employment. Conway explained that his client was not brought up in the most desirable circumstances. He was a resident of Port Kaituma; he lived with his father, mother and younger sister; she was 14-years-old at the time of the incident.
The attorney told the court that due to his living circumstances, George was forced to leave school at an early age and fend for himself.
“My client is very remorseful for what happened and seeks the mercy of this honourable court in sentencing.”
Additionally, the lawyer pointed out that George who wore a face mask to Court, is suffering from a respiratory illness (Tuberculosis) from which he is now in the recovery stage.
State Prosecutor Tamieka Clarke supplied the court with the facts of the case. Clarke said that George dealt the husband of his aunt several deadly chops after the man simply asked him, “why he was working in the interior at such a young age.”
Given a chance to respond before the sentence was passed, George told the court that he had nothing to say.
As such, the man was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison for the killing.
