Since the launch in 1993, the CARICOM Youth Ambassador, (CYA) Programme has contributed to increased awareness of CARICOM issues and priorities among young people.
The CYA project has raised the profile of youth at the national and regional levels. It has assisted in integrating the views and perspectives of young people from across the region towards forming national, regional and international policies for their development.
To this end, a group of energetic and talented young people from across the Region is engaged in the capacity building workshop currently underway to engage CARICOM Secretariat, Lilendaal East Coast Demerara.
The four-day seminar commenced yesterday and is set to be interactive; take the form of presentations, discussions and working groups.
It will include panel discussions involving key CARICOM secretariat staff , representatives of international development partners, and deliver various interactive capacity building sessions.
The workshop will also focus on contemporary issues affecting CYAs.
During the sessions youth representatives for almost every CARICOM Member State will be equipped with the knowledge of executing their mandate effectively.
The seminar is designed to help CPA understand their roles and functions and build capacity for advocacy and action in relation to the relevant international and regional development mandates, plans and programmes.
These include Caribbean Single Market and Economy ,(CSME) the CARICOM Strategic Plan , the CARICOM Youth Development Action Plan,(CYDAP) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , as well as a range of thematic issues such as youth in agriculture , culture , the creative industries , crime and security, human resource development and energy.
Additionally, efforts will be geared towards developing a CYAP Action Plan for the period 2017- 2019.
The main objectives of the orientation and capacity building exercise are to introduce the CYAs to roles and functions, build CYA in relations to relevant international and regional developments mandates , plans and programme, especially the CARICOM Youth Development Action Plan(CYDAP) as the governing framework.
Towards the end of the exercise, a draft action plan which clearly identifies mechanisms through which CYAs will mobilize other youth, advance different regional mandates and greater understanding among themselves for increased advocacy, is to be established.
The seminar is supported by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat with the support of the Government of Guyana, The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, (FAQ) and the United Nations Children Fund, (UNICEF).
