A police constable was yesterday placed on $75,000 bail after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Gadi Hoyte, 26, of Lot 54 Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, denied the allegation which stated that on December 3, 2016 at Ekereku Landing, Essequibo, he unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Maxine Duncan so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
The defendant was represented by Attorney, Tiffany Jeffery, who in her application to secure bail for her client told the court that her client has been a member of the Guyana Police Force for eight years and he has no previous matters.
The court heard that the defendant is still an active member of the Guyana Police Force and he is attached to the Tactical Service Unit (TSU).
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant. The prosecutor stated that on the day in question Maxine Duncan went to the station to make a report, while at the station she and the defendant became involved an argument and she left.
The court heard that after the virtual complainant left the station the defendant left after her and the two became embroiled in another argument; the defendant then took a beer bottle and hit her in the face.
As a result of the blow the virtual complainant sustained a black and blue discoloration to her left side face. The matter was then reported and an investigation was conducted.
Conditions to the bail are that the defendant must not go within 50 feet, nor have any communication with the virtual complainant.
He was placed on a bond to keep the peace until the completion of the trial.
Hoyte will make his next court appearance on June 20 at the Kamarang Magistrates’ Court.
