Quincy Clarke, a 29-year-old mason of West La Penitence, was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to 11 counts of armed robbery.
It is alleged that on May 12 at North East La Penitence, Georgetown, while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed 11 persons of a quantity of cellular phones, bags, make-up sets, umbrellas, water bottles, watches, jewellery and cash, all totalling $478,100.
Clarke denied all the charges after they were read to him by the magistrate, claiming that he had no knowledge of the incident.
Clarke was represented by Attorney-at-Law Paul Fung-a-Fat who told the court that his client is a mason and sometimes would make blocks to provide for his family. Fung-a-Fat further told the court that his client had never been charged before and is not a flight risk.
However Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence, the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts, as well as the fact that a firearm was used to commit the offence.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant was charged last year for a similar offence. The court heard that more charges are likely to be laid against him.
According to information, on the day in question, the defendant, while being in the company of others, intercepted a Qualfon bus which was transporting workers home, when the bus was stopped and the occupants were told to lie on the ground. The defendant then collected their valuables.
Bail was refused and Clarke was remanded to prison. He will make his next court appearance on June 12.
