A post mortem (PM) examination done on the remains of 70-year-old Suresh Mangru has revealed that the pensioner died as a result of a hit and run accident.
The PM was done yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh.
Kaieteur News was told that the vehicle, which struck the 70-year-old man, allegedly ran over his chest.
The body of Suresh Mangru of 35 Garden of Eden was found around 04:30 hrs last Wednesday on the roadway at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara (EBD) with a wound to his head and right ribs.
Investigators were awaiting the result of the PM to pronounce on the pensioner’s death since there wasn’t any debris at the scene to suggest that it was an accident although Mangru’s injuries were consistent with an accident.
His body was found some 400 meters from his home.
The man’s niece, who identified herself as Bhagmattie Peters, said that she only knew that her uncle had died when police ranks went to her home to inform her.
She indicated that her uncle was occupying a small room in the house located next to her home.
Peters said that Mangru consumed a lot of alcohol, but in recent times, he had stopped drinking.
”He got old and sickly so he de ease up de drinking. He does be in his room and his nephew family does give him food.”
The woman said that the elderly man was involved in an accident some years ago which caused him to “walk slow and shaky.” “He takes a long time to walk a short distance.”
The woman and other relatives have no idea what the pensioner was doing out on the road so early.
Kaieteur News was informed that the man has children, but his relatives do not know where they are living and claimed that they have not visited Mangru for quite some time.
”We don’t know if they know he died,” one relative said. No one has any contact details for his children.
