Norma Scott, one of the first female soldiers of to enlist in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), celebrated her 85th birthday last Saturday, May 6.

Commanding Officer of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), Lt Colonel Natasha Stanford, yesterday presented Scott with a hamper, in celebration of the milestone.
The presentation was made on behalf of the Chief of Staff and the Women’s Army Corps.
Noting the significance of Ms Scott’s service to the GDF and Guyana, Stanford thanked her for her service and expressed best wishes on the observance of her 85th birthday. Scott, according to the army, said she was humbled by the love expressed.
She then burst into song, rendering a version of song Amazing Grace, much to the delight of everyone present.
Scott enlisted in the GDF on February 6, 1967. She served for four years. At the time of departing the GDF- she held the rank of Lance Corporal.
