The eight cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, MS and their counterparts of the Club’s Over-35 Group on Tuesday last honoured three senior citizens Mothers during their monthly programme for old age
pensioners at the Rose Hall Town Post Office. The RHTY&SC members provided breakfast and snacks for close to 300 pensioners as they waited for hours to uplift their pension and also provided each person with two small gifts. The teams are Farfan and Mendes Under 15, Bakewell Under 17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under 19 and Intermediate, Metro Females and Gizmos and Gadgets Under 21 and First Division.
In a surprise gesture, three mothers with a combined age of 223 received Mother’s Day gifts from the eight cricket teams and the Over-35 Group. Members of the Club distributed raffle tickets to each mother present and then a special drawing was done in-front of all the pensioners. Shirley Batson of Persaud Street, Rose Hall Town was the Winner of the draw and received a Mother’s Day hamper from Massy Industries. The other two special mothers received a Ricks and Sari Agro Industries Hamper and an Electric iron respectively.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster, who spearheads the RHTY&SC outreach campaign, hailed the monthly programme as a huge success and as one of the most satisfying the Club has ever undertaken. He disclosed that despite the huge expenses associated with the pensioners programme, it would continue on a monthly basis on the first working day at the Rose Hall Town Post Office for 300 pensioners. The cricket teams and the Over-35 Group would expand the programme next month to the Nigg Post Office to cater for another 200 persons on a bi-monthly basis.
The idea for the Senior Citizens programme was born when numerous requests for assistance was made to the Club’s Office due to the fact that many pensioners were feeling unwell after waiting for as long as six hours to uplift their pension. This programme is just one of eight that the RHTY&SC hosts for senior citizens and is funded by the Club and its official sponsor, Bakewell. Foster also disclosed that on the 1st of June, the teams and the Over-35 Group would be honouring three outstanding fathers under the Walter Nero Memorial Tribute to Fathers Programme.
Meanwhile, under the RHTY&SC Cricket Development Programme for Clubs across Berbice, the eight teams assisted the Bush Lot United Cricket team with a pair of wicket keeping gloves and three trophies. The West Coast Berbice team requested the items from the RHTY&SC and the request was granted within twenty four hours. The wicketkeeping gloves would be used by the Bush Lot CC junior cricket teams, while the trophies would be used to host a cricket tournament among four Clubs in West Berbice.
The donation represents the second assistance package that Bush Lot has received from the RHTY&SC within a month after collecting cricket balls and a complete set of stumps at the Club’s 27th annual award ceremony on the 23rd of April. Foster noted that his Club was fully committed towards assisting fellow cricket Clubs in Berbice as it wants every Club to enjoy similar success as the RHTY&SC.
For 2017 alone, the RHTY&SC has donated over $4M worth of equipment to Clubs and sportsmen across Berbice. He urged other Clubs across Guyana, who are in a good position to assist others who need assistance, to do so.
President of the BLCC, Robbie Saywack expressed gratitude to the RHTY&SC, describing the Guyana Cricket Club of the Year 2016 awardee as a true friend of Berbice Cricket. The main objective of the Bush Lot Club, Saywack noted is to emulate the Rose Hall Town Club and its activities on and off the cricket field.
