Dear Editor,
I read with keen interest a report in Kaieteur News, Thursday, May 4, 2017 under the caption, “ Drivers’ licences being suspended once charged with dangerous driving- Ramjattan.” The article quoted the Minister of Public Security as saying that the process of suspending drivers’ licence once they have been charged with dangerous driving has started. According to the article the Minister was speaking at the launch of the National Road Safety action plan for the years 2017 to 2019.
This report left me confused. My little knowledge of the traffic laws is that the Minister has the power to suspend a driver from driving who is charged for causing death by dangerous driving pending the outcome of the case but he cannot suspend a driver from driving who is charged with dangerous driving. There is a vast difference between the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and that of dangerous driving. Hope that the reporter misquoted the Minister or the flood gates of unethical and corrupt behaviour between the police and drivers will be opened when the latter are caught driving dangerously.
Clinton Conway
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Rtd)
