Acid attack victim begins journey to recovery

Months after she was doused with a corrosive substance, acid attack victim Shondell Williamson is finally able to acquire the extensive medical care she needs in her journey to recovery.

This is according to an announcement by Saving Hands Emergency Aid, (SHEA) a charitable organisation based in New York, which provides financial assistance and coordinates free or low-cost treatment to address the emergency medical needs of individuals in impoverished countries.
The charity, founded by US-based Guyanese, Lori Narine, has been actively involved in efforts to get the young mother the overseas medical attention she desperately needs.
According to information posted on SHEA’s official website, the mother of two departed Guyana at 4:30 pm Tuesday, on board a Dynamic International Airways flight bound for New York.
“We are delighted to announce that Shondell’s journey to recovery has begun. SHEA Charity would like to express sincere gratitude to everyone who donated to make this all possible for Shondell.
We would also like to thank all the volunteers at SHEA, especially Fabian Manpowan, Sita Sugrim and Tracey Khan, for their incredible dedication and tremendous hard work on this case. Please join us in wishing Shondell a full, speedy recovery,” Narine said in a post on her Facebook page.
The SHEA founder noted, however, donations are still very urgently needed to help the young mother as she recovers. She, therefore, encouraged persons who wished to contribute, to visit her Facebook page.
Williamson, a mother of two, suffered severe burns following an acid attack earlier this year. It is alleged that her reputed husband, Alfred De Younge, called “Not ah Bai” committed the cowardly act, while disguised as a woman. He has been remanded to prison and is currently facing attempted murder charges.
Williamson was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC) where she underwent weeks of treatment. However, it was noted that the local medical facilities do not offer the aid Williamson needs for adequate recovery. The US-based charity, therefore, stepped in to secure the treatment.
Williamson has been permanently disfigured since the burns cover her entire face. Due to the severity of her injuries and the fact that her eyes are so badly damaged, SHEA had initially faced a great challenge finding the right facility that is capable of treating all of her injuries.
“Fortunately, we have been able to secure treatment for her at a top US hospital, where she will receive state of the art treatment, from some of the best doctors in the field,” the information on the website had previously outlined.
