In a simple ceremony the Lions Club of Linden in collaboration with the Linden Fund USA commissioned the newly rehabilitated bus shed at the Linden Hospital Complex on Thursday.
President of the Lions Club in Linden, Dr. Karen Perreira, explaining how the project was birthed, said that Lionism has been in existence for 100 years and in celebration or commemoration of the 100th year the clubs have to complete a ‘Legacy Project’.
“This Legacy Project is one that can be seen and be used in the community for years. Myself being a worker at the Linden Hospital complex I would have noticed that from time to time persons would use the bus shed, but the bus shed was not in the state it should be.
“This information was taken to the club and it was decided that the club in collaboration with Linden Fund USA will rehabilitate the bus shed so that the public can have the use of it not for today, but for tomorrow and for years to come.”
According to the Lions President the estimated cost for the rehabilitation of the Bus Shed is $303,600. She said work is still in progress and it will be completed in another two weeks.
However, the club wanted to complete and commission the shed during the Town Week celebrations.
She said this is just the beginning and urged the community at large to report to any Lion if they noticed any project in their community which needs to be improved.
They also thanked other sponsors such as B. Harry Lumber Yard, Chetram Brothers Lumber Yard and Mc Rae General Store.
Chairman of the Linden Fund USA, Paula Walcott, noted that Linden is the place that gave the organization a wonderful start so the organisation must give back to the community.
“Linden Fund USA has been in existence for almost 20 years and we really want to grow our impact, grow our footprint in the Linden community.”
According to Walcott it was when she was here for the Jubilee celebrations last year that she was approached by the Lions Club and fell in love with the collaborating idea immediately. She fleshed out the project they wanted to do. “I thought it was really worthy I want to say a hearty thank you to the family of R.A. Adams, a wealthy and influential Industrialist in Linden and his family for really believing in the Linden Fund USA and its mission to assist Linden and to allow the collaboration.
“They are really the big sponsor for the funding that came through the Linden Fund USA; also to Dr. Keith Seaforth, former Board Member of the Linden Fund USA.
“This project is the R.A. Adams memorial project. A sign will be erected to reflect that. We hope it is used as intended and everyone would be able to upkeep it so that others can come and use it for years to come.”
Walcott reiterated Dr. Perreira’s comments that the bus shed is a Work In Progress (WIP) as the seats are to be painted and lights have to be installed.
