Government has picked two veteran media operatives, Enrico Woolford and Gordon Moseley, to help turn the fortunes of state-owned National Communications Network (NCN) around.
Woolford will be the Chairman of the NCN, which runs a network and television and radio stations across the country. He has been more known for Capitol News, a newscast that been running for more than two decades now. Woolford at the moment is attached to the Ministry of Public Telecommunications.
Moseley, who initially rose to prominence at Capitol News, will be a board member.
The other board members will be Beverly Alert, Margaret Lawrence, Michael Leonard, Kamal Persaud and Dane Gobin. This board will serve from May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018.
Yesterday, at the post-Cabinet press briefing, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, made it clear that the new board will be guided by policy.
In a direct response to a question on government’s expectation of the NCN’s new board, Minister Harmon noted that, “the guidelines that they will receive with respect to ensuring that the entity operates as one that provides information to the Guyanese public, that the information is timely, accurate, and that it is something that Guyanese people can look forward to.”
There have been instances of political interference in the past in NCN, a fact that critics said contributed to the poor performance, despite the millions of dollars in subventions the entity received annually.
Also announced yesterday was a new board for the Privatisation Unit.
It will be chaired by Dr. Grantley Walrond with its members including Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin; Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma; Sabina Savory, Grantley Culbard and a representative of the private sector. This board will serve until December 2017.
The Privatisation Board had been established to oversee the divestment of the country’s assets.
