Dear Editor,
In March of this year, we observed International Women’s Day which was celebrated all across Guyana and afar. While we must salute those women who have contributed to the development of our country, we must also acknowledge the women’s organisations that have stood up against the abuses that were perpetrated against the will of our children, sisters, mothers and daughters of this country.
Not so long ago, an attempt was made to defame the unquestionable track record of our Region 9, Assistant REO, Miss Althea Fitzpatrick, by planting a package containing drugs in close proximity of her Tabatinga residence, in Lethem, central Rupununi.
It was very disturbing and disgusting to learn that such a humble and god fearing woman was targeted by these criminal-minded goons to drive fear in her for unknown reasons. While this pill remains hard to swallow, these goons also used the social media to add more pressure on our Assistant REO in an attempt to bring trumped up charges against her. However, good judgement prevailed among the police ranks at the Lethem police station.
Our Assistant Regional Executive Officer, Miss Althea Fitzpatrick is a former teacher by profession and would have taught many of the students who are now at the secondary level, and also those who would have completed schooling and are presently working in the closely knit community of Lethem.
While it is very difficult to accept the fact that Ms. Fitzpatrick has now chosen to distribute drugs among these very young people that she had nurtured over the years at the nursery level, it is with God’s’ grace that she had been delivered from the claws of these devils; while the goons are left without life jackets to sink in the very murky waters they had wanted to pull her under.
Editor, it is in my humble opinion that Ms. Fitzpatrick is very aware of the challenges that these young students face in the Rupununi to have reached this point in their educational career. More so, she would have great expectations from those who have grown to adults and she would never have considered being involved in the distribution of drugs to destroy these young people at will.
These unfortunate circumstances have placed this respected woman in a very awkward position, where she was forced to abandon her home because of fear; driven into her by these criminal-minded goons. Hence, a number of concerned women and men residing at Tabatinga, Lethem and its environs of Region 9 are calling on the women’s organisations in this country to join them in condemning this well planned plot to embarrass Ms. Fitzpatrick in her capacity as a senior public officer and deny her the right to reside at her private property. Editor, we close in adding our voices with those who are in support of our women who are under constant attack by these pathological goons on the loose.
