Chief Executive Officer of the State Asset Recovery Unit (SARU), Aubrey Heath-Retemyer says
that he is willing to submit himself to a polygraph test and is challenging opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo to take one as well.
Retemyer said that he can account for every penny he has and he is willing to have an international firm conduct the exercise. The SARU head challenged the former president to submit himself to the test if he has nothing to hide.
The SARU head was responding to Jagdeo’s accusation that SARU officials are shaking down businessmen and that their personal bank accounts have swollen with cash of late.
Retemyer said that Jagdeo’s accusation against SARU officials is disgusting and has no substance. He said that if the former head of state has proof of such behaviour by officials from his unit, he should share it with the police.
The outspoken CEO said that if officials from SARU are engaged in such behaviour, let them be embarrassed, and his unit will stand by the consequences.
Retemyer said that Jagdeo is a desperate individual who is hungry for power and he is sure that the former president has no evidence. He said that if that were the case, “why aren’t the businessmen coming forward?”
Retemyer said that Jagdeo constantly distorts the truth and continues to spread propaganda about government officials of the ruling administration.
“He tries to pin officials with some kind of label that he and his colleagues truly deserve”.
Retemyer is of the view that Jagdeo has no interest in the upliftment of Guyana, but his agenda is clear and Guyanese will see him for exactly who he is.
“He (Jagdeo) is interested in power and getting his hands on the upcoming oil, nothing else”. The SARU head said that Jagdeo is salivating for power so that he can spread the wealth with his colleagues and disregard the Guyanese nation.
Reflecting on Jagdeo’s reign as president, Retemyer said that if you were not willing to ‘play ball’ with him, you couldn’t exist regardless of who you were.
“Only if you were prepared to be one of his lackeys and go along with everything that he said, you could have existed with this man”.
Retemyer said that he finds it laughable that Jagdeo thinks he has the moral authority to speak on anything.
He said that his agency is only concerned with ensuring that the government’s property is properly accounted for, and the days of using the government’s resources without accountability are over.
