The 23-year-old maintenance worker who was shot in the stomach by a 69-year-old woman is in a stable condition at the Male Surgical Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The incident occurred last Friday in the vicinity of the Alpha Hotel at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, where the victim is employed.
Brandon Collins, of Manchester Village, Corentyne, was reportedly shot while clearing vines from a fence that separates the Hotel from the woman’s property.
It is alleged that Collins, who had a cutlass, had clambered onto the fence. The woman, who has a licenced firearm, is said to have ordered the man to climb down, she then discharged a round, which struck Collins in the abdomen. The bullet passed through his body. Collins was rushed to hospital where he remains a patient,
The injured man is said to be recovering well, after he underwent emergency surgery. In a brief comment to Kaieteur News from his hospital bed, Collins said that he is befuddled about the incident but was thankful to be alive.
The woman, Leila Jagdeo, reportedly told police that she shot the man after she thought he was a bandit. She has since been charged and released on bail.
Last week, Jagdeo, of Lot 3 Ogle, East Bank Demerara, was indicted for discharging a loaded firearm at Collins. She was released on $100,000 bail after an appearance before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court. She is expected to return to Court on May 22.
