Nearly three weeks after the corpse of 24-year-old Arnold Gordon was found in a shallow grave, his 28-year-old cousin was yesterday remanded to prison for his murder.
Levi Stevens 28, of Kumu, Central Rupununi appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on March 17 at Kumu, he murdered Gordon.
The body of Gordon, a labourer of Crapaud Pond, Central Rupununi, was found in a grave around 16.30hrs on March 17 in an area known as Tiger Plate, also in Central Rupununi.
An arrow was embedded in his right armpit. An iron rod was also found near the murder scene.
The sole eyewitness to the killing is said to be a six-year-old boy, who is the slain man’s cousin.
According to reports, Gordon and the little boy left home around 17:00hrs on March 16 to fish at a pond next to the Tiger Plate area.
While in the area, Gordon reportedly encountered Stevens and an argument ensued.
It is alleged that Stevens picked up a piece of wood and a metal rod and struck Gordon.
Based on reports, after Gordon failed to return home, his grandmother reported the matter to police. A search was launched by residents during which time they located what appeared to be a shallow grave in some bushes about twenty feet from a camp. After a few minutes of digging, they saw a hand protruding from the grave. They notified police, who dug up the grave, which was about two feet deep, and found Gordon’s corpse.
The unrepresented murder accused was instructed to make another court appearance on June 6 at the Lethem Magistrate’s Courts.
