Contractors and other affected stakeholders of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), staged
a protest against the Regional Executive Officer, Rupert Hopkinson, in front of the Regional Democratic Council.
This exercise was interrupted by another protesting party that made an effort to divert media attention from the other demonstration. The two rival parties had different opinions about the REO; whether he should be removed from office, or whether he should stay.
Peace however was maintained by the local police who ensured that the exercise remained peaceful.
The protest against the REO was organized by some of his former friends and close associates, who felt that that they have been cheated in their friendship.
The opposition claimed that REO, Mr. Hopkinson, should be removed from office because they believed he is greedy and selfish.
“Rupert believes he is a god and that he can determine who eats and who starves, but we would have to put a stop to this! We are here today to put an end to this!” They also accused the REO of creating employment only for the rich. “The REO took away a contract from a man just because the man complained about him. He’s asking us the contractors to bid low because he wants to save the money for his own benefit.”
The counter-protesters however, sought good reasons to ensure that Mr. Hopkinson remains in office. Leader of counter party, Dianne Peters, told Kaieteur that the REO is doing a lot for the region.
She said that there is accountability and transparency within the region. “The REO has successfully renovated dilapidated buildings, cleaned drains and has had new bridges built in various communities.”
Mrs. Peters also said that the contractors failed to work in line with Government policies. “Contractors should complete work because they cannot be paid for incomplete and inferior works. Government policies must be adhered to.
“They expect the REO to waste the money and pay for incomplete work. The REO always does and will continue to act in behalf of the entire region.” (Romario Blair)
