Magistrate Rhondel Weever, on Monday at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court, ruled that a prima facie case was made out against a Hopetown man accused of murder and rape, and so he has committed the accused, Devon Griffith, to stand trial at the Berbice High Court.
Griffith, 26, also known as Two- Kick, of Cemetery Road, Hopetown Village, West Coast Berbice, is accused of raping and murdering 79-year-old Vida Britton at her son’s residence, 10 Main Street Hopetown, West Coast Berbice, on October 3, 2015.
The accused who was well known to the victim, his great-aunt, was charged on October 9, 2015, but the matter was discharged in the Magistrate Court on a technical point argued by then counsel for the defense, Peter Hughes. However, Two-kick had his freedom curtailed early in February when he appeared in court to give evidence against Quinn George who had wounded him during an altercation late last year. He was rearrested on February 2 in connection with the death of Vida Britton which had taken place on October 3, 2015.
Medical report suggests that the elderly woman was strangled and sexually assaulted, and the victim’s granddaughter now ten years old would have witnessed the incident.
With the accused having been committed to stand trial in the High Court, he has been remanded to prison, and he is now awaiting a date for trial.
