Your National Identification Card, your passport and your work badge, all have the same things in common – your name, and a photograph of your face. It’s the two things that ultimately make you who you are.
But imagine waking up one day and not recognizing the person staring back at you in the mirror. Imagine having every remnant of that image terribly changed.
It may sound merely horrific to many, but it is the truth that 26-year-old Shondell Williamson has to live with every single day.
The young mother of two is the victim of a brutal acid attack which occurred at New Amsterdam, Berbice. Hearing the voices of her children is now her only comfort in life. Most of her vision is gone, and her physical condition even prevents her from soothing her soul with a cuddle from her little ones.
The man who is allegedly responsible for this transformation is allegedly someone she once opened up her heart to.
It is alleged that her reputed husband, Alfred De Younge, called “Not ah Bai” committed the cowardly act, while wearing the disguise of a woman. He has been remanded to prison and is currently facing attempted murder charges.
Williamson was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC) last Wednesday following weeks of treatment.
Her sister, Latoya Williamson disclosed that although her circumstances are far from the usual, Shondell is doing her best to keep her spirits up.
“She’s happy to be home. At least, she gets to hear her kids’ voices, most of the times. She has limited vision. She would notice like if the light is on or off.”
Williamson noted that the family continues to mount efforts to help her sister recover.
The Williamsons joined efforts with the overseas- based charity, Saving Hands and Emergency Aid (SHEA) to get her the treatment she so desperately needs. Since SHEA Charity accepted Shondell’s case, they have been working to secure treatment.
According to information posted on SHEA’s Website, Shondell has been permanently disfigured, since the burns cover her entire face. The extent of her injuries is so severe that she is not able to receive care in Guyana, therefore, she must travel overseas for treatment.
However, due to the severity of her injuries and the fact that her eyes are so badly damaged, SHEA faced a great challenge in finding the right facility that is capable of treating all of her injuries.
“Fortunately, we have been able to secure treatment for her at a top US hospital, where she will receive state of the art treatment, from some of the best doctors in the field,” the information on the website said.
SHEA is funded by donations from the public on a case by case basis; therefore, we are once again asking for your help. Kindly donate so that we can help this young mom overcome some of the challenges she is currently facing.
Given that the group is funded by donations, they continue to seek members of the public for assistance on a case by case basis.
The group has been active in promoting a GOFUNDME on behalf of Williamson, in the hopes of raising the required US$ 40,000.
A relative of the injured woman recently disclosed that there has also been fundraising activity in East Berbice to raise funds for the cause.
We are still looking to raise the monies, the relative said. Persons interested in making donations can call telephone 601-4040, 675-3709 or visit the SHEA website at www.sheacharity.org or the group’s facebook page. To help bring aid to this young mom, persons can donate directly to her bank account in Guyana: Bank: GBTI Name: Lottia Williamson
