A man who admitted to stealing from Mashramani revellers was yesterday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after he was arraigned before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The charge read that on February 23 at Brickdam, Georgetown, Wayne Barker, 35, of McDoom, East Bank Demerara, stole one purse valued $2,000 and one Cellular phone worth $80,000 from Caroline Isaacs.
The man pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate. He told the court that he was under the influence of alcohol due to the Mashramani celebration.
The court heard that on the same day, Barker stole from Jessica Puran, one purse valued $3,000, one cellular phone worth $23,000 and $15,000 in cash.
Barker pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to him and told the court “yes, I did thief the stuff from the ladies, but I did not mean to do it.”
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne told the court that the Virtual Complainants are not known to the accused and on the day in question they all were part of the float parade when he pushed his hands in their bags and took out the articles mentioned in the charge. Barker was seen by other revellers putting the articles in a black bag.
Prosecutor Payne also informed the court that the items were not recovered.
When asked by the Magistrate if he would like to say anything before she passed down the sentencing Barker stated “madam, it was a busy day, and I was only following the women to make sure that no one thief from them, because they were both dancing in the crowd. After the crowd was getting more and more big, I decided to take out their purse to keep it for safety…so I decided to place it in a black bag.”
The man further told the court that he was previously jailed and released for a similar offence.
