Leroy Williams, 25, of 11 D’Urban Backlands, one of the accused in the Kaieteur News grenade attack,
was yesterday sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by Magistrate Madan Kissoon at the conclusion of the trial in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court at a sitting of the Night Courts.
Williams, who is well known for being disruptive at every sitting of court, yesterday, did not showcase his bad temper yesterday as the only thing that he uttered to the Magistrate after hearing he was sentenced was, “This is a wrong deal.”
Williams was found guilty of having a .32 revolver in his possession on January 23, 2016 at D’Urban Street, Lodge Georgetown, when he was not in possession of a firearm licence. He was also fined $50,000.
At yesterday’s court hearing, the Magistrate told Williams that he was satisfied with the evidence led by the prosecution and by the four witnesses who were not discredited.
According to information, on the day in question, Police acting on information went on a sting operation at D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, where they conducted a searched on Williams and found a .32 revolver on his left side.
Williams when told of the offence he replied, “Officer I just get this gun. Give me a chance.”
The Magistrate told the court that he found Williams’s unsworn testimony a very unusual one.
Williams, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Neil Bollers, told the court that his client has never been convicted.
Bollers further stated that his client has been incarcerated for nine months for the Kaieteur News grenade attack.
Williams is currently on remand awaiting trial at the High Court after Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against him and two others who are accused of lobbing a grenade to Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall vehicle, last June.
The offence occurred on June 4, 2015, at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
