Dear Editor,
The community of Lethem is appalled by the conduct and behaviour of the Mayor of Lethem, Mr. Carlton Beckles whose approach leaves a lot to be desired and has no limits.
After the National Elections of May 2015, Mr. Parker was identified and subsequently selected, based on his experience in the Regional System, and assumed the position of acting REO and subsequently, confirmed as the REO. I am aware that this created a lot of discomfort with Mr. Beckles who claimed that he has a ceremonial position and was not in receipt of acceptable levels of income as Chairman of the IMC of the NDC at the time. This persisted even after the NDC became a town and Mr. Beckles was elevated to the position of Mayor.
I am also aware as a Youth Leader and Women’s Advocate, of the various programmes and activities over which Mr. Beckles wanted total control. I have heard him complain many times that he was working hard and was adequately compensated for his efforts.
In December of 2016, I became aware of attempt by the Bartica municipality to use the system to purchase items from certain source and invoices were submitted for payment at the Regional Office. I understand that there was refusal to process the payments. I have attached copies of invoices and vouchers for your perusal and review. As a youth I am disappointed and disillusioned by the promotion of disunity and chaos in the municipal government of Bartica. We deserve better than this.
