Dear Editor,
Permit me to share a few thoughts in your paper on the very obnoxious matter of the paid parking meter policy as is implemented by the M&CC of the city of Georgetown. Whilst there had been continuous opposition to this infringement of the rights of the people of Guyana, namely by the Movement Against Parking Meter, what was noticeable at the inception of this movement was the silence of political parties that make up the ruling coalition. But finally came a sudden outburst against the meter project by the AFC and quite recently The Justice for All Party.
Whilst it is better late than never, such an approach must be lauded to some degree by these minority parties in the coalition government. The only opposition in Parliament, the PPP has been having their say too, but what is interesting, is not a statement from the majority political party in the coalition. The PNC has not yet been forthcoming. What will be more interesting however is if such a statement does appear, one is only left to wonder about its contents.
I say this in light of the fact that the signatories to the contract between M&CC and Smart Solutions were high office holders of the PNC; its general secretary, Oscar Clarke and an executive member of the same party, Patricia Chase-Green. What is mind-boggling is the approach taken by the President, His Excellency David Granger, leader of the PNC and Minister of Communities Honourable, Ronald Bulkan. Both are also high ranking members of the majority PNC in the coalition government. Both of these gentlemen have not been strongly assertive on their position towards this parking meter fiasco that has seen thousands of its own supporters coming out on the streets of Georgetown to protest this vulgar imposition on the citizens, not only of the capital city but also nationwide.
It leaves me to wonder; is the PNC willing to support its executive members over the general welfare and desires of the populace? We have had enough ranting and raving of the previous administration, that is, the failures, and misdeeds of the PPP. We the people are not fools! We can decipher wrong from right and for me the PPP was indeed no angel in government, but can the same be said at this point of time, of the coalition government, made up of the likes of the PNC, AFC, JFAP, WPA and others? I wish the people give this some thought!
