Dear Editor,
I noticed that opposition leader, Bharat Jagdeo has responded violently to the tabling of the state asset recovery bill, and some of his frightened cronies are screaming that the work of the chief investigator/prosecutor would violate the rights of citizens. This law is needed just as the fresh air we breathe for the survival of our people. For too long, many persons who held state posts and positions of influence ripped off this country massively. They stole state monies, state lands, state contracts, and state assets.
I read with horror the revelation by Professor Clive Thomas, the head of the State Asset Recovery Unit (SARU), that Guyana was losing every year up to 35 billion dollars to friends and cronies via contracts and other procurement fraud; 90 billion dollars from folks buying our foreign currency and taking gold out of the country; and 188 billion dollars through smuggling contraband goods, constituting what is referred to as “the underground economy”.
For years, Guyana has been bleeding over 300 billion dollars every year, while our working people were given a shameful 5 percent increase. It is time we find out who owns what and where with the stolen wealth. Sweet Lord my head is spinning over the thought that for a ten year period Guyana lost three trillion dollars! How do you say that? – 3,000,000,000,000 – three thousand billion? I urge this government to pass the SARA bill in spite of how much Mr. Jagdeo and his “business” cronies bawl!
Kumar J Persaud
