Questions loom over makeup of Smart City Solutions Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of Smart City Solutions (SCS), the company responsible for implementing
the controversial parking meter project, only comprises two members. One of them is Ifagbamila Kamau Cush. That is according to the records in the Deeds Registry.
Interestingly, Cush was fired a few days ago by the very Board of Directors, raising questions of whether he voted to fire himself.
During a media conference on Friday, the company’s Managing Director, Amir Oren, was quizzed on the matter. His initial response was, “As you’ve seen in the press recently, we have required that Mr. Cush resign from the Board of Directors, and we are in the process of filing the paper work in the public registry…It takes time to file those papers.”
Pressed further for information on who are “we”, since Cush was indeed one of the two Directors of the Company, Oren declared, “The Board of Directors does not comprise two people.”
He went on to explain, “We have a board of directors and it comprises the members who are the ones that have operated in different countries, and we are in the process of filing those papers for your public registry…”
The persistence of this newspaper to find out who the other board members are, led to Oren saying, “When we file it, you’ll see.”
Asked again, why Guyanese aren’t allowed to know who the other people tasked with implementing the parking meter project are, moderator of the press conference, and Public
Relations Officer of SCS, Kit Nacimento interjected, “You can’t…first time the question is being asked.”
It was on Wednesday that Smart City Solutions announced that after demanding it, the company’s Board of Directors accepted Cush’s resignation.
In a statement, SCS said that even though Cush was at the forefront of introducing the metered parking project, he has not been involved in any of the company’s operations for several months.
The company was sure to remind of Cush’s offensive social media posts, in which he referred to Guyanese opposing metered parking as “freeloaders”.
“You lack the intestinal fortitude to control your own destiny. You all possess the mentality of slaves, indentured servants incapable of generating wealth and building capacity,” Cush continued.
In another post, Cush said that, “That is my personal opinion. I did not utter those statements on behalf of Smart City Solutions. The protestors represent a cabal of misfits who add no value to the productive capacity of our country. They bring no gravitas, no moral authority to the conversation.”
SCS subsequently distanced itself from the comments made by Cush, describing these as unacceptable and disgraceful. (Rehana Ahamad)
