Dear Editor,
I was deeply saddened when I read the doleful news regarding the sudden demise of former Ambassador and Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guyana, Noel Sinclair, as reported in the online edition of Kaieteur News dated February 05, 2017. In that regard, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of my family and self to extend our sincere condolences to his bereaved spouse and family, siblings, relatives and friends. It was my honour and privilege to have met this illustrious son of Guyana when I served at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to my postings at its Overseas Missions in Beijing, New York and Washington D.C. respectively. Inasmuch as I did not fall directly under his supervision, I did have some pleasant encounters with him when I was required in the execution of my official duties to transact on behalf of the Ministry, business at the Ministry of Finance in Georgetown, Guyana.
With respect to his scintillating academic credentials, in my humble view, he was a twinkling star in the diplomatic galaxy. Moreover, apart from his unique charisma, he was the epitome of comity, kindness and humility. Saint Augustine the celebrated Christian theologian and philosopher once posited that “it was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.”
As I reflect on that golden thought, I am convinced that Ambassador Sinclair was an angel in this temporal world. I close my tribute to our Fallen Star by quoting from Shakespeare’s Horatio at the death of Hamlet, the following illuminating lines;
“Now cracks a noble heart.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
In similar style, I would venture to say Farewell, our gracious Ambassador. May the angels in Heaven guard your sweet soul as you sleep in the bosom of our Saviour until that glorious morning of the Resurrection when there shall be death no more.
