A 60-year-old fisherman and part-time carpenter’s life was yesterday snuffed out after a car slammed into him while he was cycling along the No. 1 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
Dead is Ivan Preme of 45 Albion Front, Corentyne.
During a visit to the home of the now dead man, this publication spoke to the grieving wife Ramdhary Preme, who related that the last time she saw her husband, “he tell me he ah guh fishing”.
The woman said that “this morning me get up and see he shaking in de hammock and me guh back to bed. When me get up back he bin done gone, ‘cause me nah see he quake and bicycle. Me know he gon fishing and wudda come back usual time like around eight”.
According to the wife, she was sitting with her son at their Albion Front home when an individual on a motorcycle went to their house and informed her that her husband had been involved in a serious accident.
The man’s daughter, Shermattie Preme told this publication that when she arrived at the hospital her father was receiving oxygen and was gasping for breath.
“I was like ‘dad please tell me something’. I called on him three times but he did not respond and about thirty minutes after the doctor come out and was calling for somebody. When I go inside back dem seh he was bleeding plenty internally, and all he ribs on the right side break up and they couldn’t save him”.
Ivan Preme was described as a quiet and easy-going person. His daughter described him as caring and loving “he always provide for his family. Is fish he went and ketch fuh feed he family and the car hit him”.
Meanwhile, according to police sources, the 58-year-old driver of the car, a Silver Toyota Fielder bearing license plate number HC 5720, is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
According to information received, the man claimed that an insect flew into his vehicle while he was driving, distracting him, and resulted in him losing control of his car which struck Preme off his bicycle and flung him several feet from impact.
Preme was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he later succumbed.
