Murder accused Colin Alleyne was injured during an altercation with other inmates at the Lusignan prison
Collin Alleyne, who is on remand for the murder of Danrasie Ganesh, who was found dead in her Montrose, East Coast Demerara home, sustained several injuries about his body after he was attacked by fellow inmates at the Lusignan, East Coast Demerara prison.
A prison source said that the prisoners attacked Alleyne after he threatened to kill prison officers. However, another source said that the murder accused was beaten by two prisoners, whom he had a longstanding grievance with. According to the source, the prisoners attacked Alleyne, 23, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara, after they woke up to his presence.
According to information reaching Kaieteur News, the incident occurred yesterday morning a few hours after Alleyne arrived at the penitentiary after being transferred from the Camp Street prison.
The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Alleyne has been on remand since 2015 for the murder of Ganesh also known as Carmen. The 77-year-old woman was found dead in her Montrose, East Coast Demerara home on August 1, 2015.
It was reported that Ganesh’s killer, believed to be Alleyne, clubbed her on the head with a tyre wrench and dragged her into a corner, where she collapsed. It was then the alleged killer wrapped a hand-towel around her neck, kicked and stomp the old woman until she lay motionless.
Alleyne was captured three weeks after the murder at Guyhoc Park, Georgetown. He reportedly told detectives that a male relative of Ganesh gave him $700,000 to kill the old woman and steal documents pertaining to her property. The gruesome murder was captured on CCTV cameras around the pensioner’s home.
A preliminary inquiry into Ganesh’s murder is currently ongoing at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. The matter is expected to come to an end soon since the prosecution only has one more witness to call.
Over the past couple of months, the matter had been forced into several adjournments after Alleyne insisted on behaving disorderly in the courtroom. On numerous occasions he would be heard using expletives and showing his middle finger to witnesses while they were testifying.
