In most cases, an interview is required at the U.S. Embassy or local U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office before an immigrant visa is approved or issued. In our office, we always prepare or advise our clients on appropriate behavior during an interview, documents to bring to the interview and questions that may be asked during the interview. Below are some tips to prepare you for an immigration interview:
1. Arrive at least 30 minutes early.
2. Bring your passport and photo identification.
3. Bring copies all of your immigration petitions submitted and all your originals civic documents (birth, marriage, divorce, etc.).
4. Review all the immigration petitions submitted and be familiar with ALL the information provided on the forms.
5. Be prepared to answer personal questions if you are at an interview related to your marriage to a U.S. citizen.
6. If the officer wants to interview you and your spouse separately, that is perfectly appropriate.
7. Listen carefully and answer only the question that the officer asks you. Do not over explain your answer. Keep your answers short and simple.
8. Bring an interpreter with you if you do not understand English.
9. Dress business casual. This is an important meeting for you, and a good impression can’t hurt.
10. Remain calm. If you don’t understand the question, ask the officer to rephrase it. If you really do not know the answer to a question, it is better to admit ignorance than make something up. It also helps to be prepared. If you know there is a part of your application that will raise suspicion, practice a truthful response.
11. Refer to the officer as “sir” or “madam” and remember your manners.
12. Do not lie to the officer.
13. Do not argue with the officer.
