Soesdyke teen gets three years for snatching schoolboy’s phone

Eighteen-year-old Joseph James was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on a charge of robbery with violence.

The charge read that on December 7, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, James robbed 14-year-old Chris Damon of one Samsung Galaxy phone valued $70,000.
The accused pleaded guilty to the change after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
James told the court that he was at a shop when he saw the schoolboy returning home from school. He said he hid himself behind the said shop and when the Virtual Complainant passed he snatched him by the neck and took his phone out of his pocket.
James went on to tell the court that after he snatched the phone he immediately ran and gave his friend the phone to keep. The friend’s name was only given as Son Son.
Damon, who was present in court for the hearing, told the court that he was walking home from school when he felt someone grab him from behind by his neck and take his phone out of his pocket. The person then ran away.
He then raised an alarm and public spirited persons chased after the accused and apprehended him. He was then taken to the Timehri Police Station.
At the station a confrontation was held between the accused and the Virtual Complainant and the accused admitted to stealing the phone. He was later charged with the offence.
Magistrate Faith McGusty asked the accused why he stole the phone to which he replied “I stole it for no reason.”
