Ground Enhancement grant increases
Five synthetic track and field facilities are high on Government’s agenda for the development of sports in Guyana. Minister Nicolette Henry, who has responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, made the disclosure during the
Budget debate in the National Assembly on Thursday.
Henry informed that $210 million was allocated for that development. It is obvious that the sum represents a figure given per facility since the total of $210 million is insufficient to build all five facilities in the Regions 2, 4, 6, 7 and 10 as disclosed.
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the Minister, in her presentation, noted that the administration highly regards sports as a tool for human development, and is also a great way of bringing diverse communities together.
Henry said that the Ministry of Education through the National Sports Commission will work to strengthen sports related services. The Minister noted that this will be done with the guidance of the National Sports Policy which is expected to be adopted in 2017.
In addition, GINA reported that the Government will work assiduously to prepare athletes, to not only participate in the 2020 Olympics, but they will be given all the requisite support and tools to compete.
Minister Henry told the National Assembly that the “Budget 2017 makes provision for support to our athletes, to benefit from training and development exposure.”
The allocation of $2M per ground under the Ministry’s Ground Enhancement Programme has been increased to $10M to improve sporting infrastructure while several sport facilities will be upgraded and equipped with Wi-Fi services where events can be streamed live and aired via the internet.
She said that the transformation of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall is an example of the level of change that will take place across the board. The Minister informed that the Government will engage Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Germany and other partners in agreement to provide training in athletics, rugby, football, swimming and other sport disciplines.
