A weeping Michael Baptiste was on Friday granted bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to the charge of simple larceny.
The charge against him and Alvin Narine read that on August 5, at Sheriff Street, they stole a Toyota Primo motorcar vehicle valued at $2.4 million and a quantity of transmission parts worth $2.5 million, property of Mahendra Ramchanand. They both pleaded not guilty.
Baptiste asked the Chief Magistrate to grant him bail citing that he fears for his life in prison since he was attacked by a few prisoners and sustained a stab wound to his abdomen and a cut across his left cheek. He displayed these in the court.
According to the Prosecutor, the stolen car was recovered by police at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, while the missing parts were recovered at New Hope, East Bank Demerara.
The 33-year-old told the court that he is the father of five and the sole bread winner for his family; he stated that he would like to go home and provide for his children.
He was then placed on $200,000 bail by the Chief Magistrate and will make his next court appearance on November 8.
