Dear Editor,
Each passing day makes clearer, the intellectual limitations of the Mayor of Georgetown, and the endemic nature of corruption at City Hall.
It is unimaginable that on the issue of conflict of interest in terms of contract distribution at the Mayor and City Council, City Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green (who is being accused of granting concessions to her immediate family members in terms of giving some of them cleaning contracts and others employment at City Hall), would respond by questioning whether her children are not allowed to work in Guyana.
She obviously does not get the concept of nepotism which refers to partiality to family and cronyism which refers to partiality to an associate or friend, both of which are unethical and undermine the common good of the Council and the citizenry.
What she fails to say is that all tender procedures were breached when the contract was awarded as there was no bidding process. What she fails to say is that her other relatives are not qualified for the jobs or salaries that they are receiving from the City’s coffers.
Is there any other city in the world where there exists a shred of decency, would the Mayor be allowed to hire relatives to high paying jobs at City Hall and award them contracts for the cleaning of the City and say it is no big thing? Her claims that her children were not given jobs under the previous administration are just simply ridiculous? Can she provide proof of this? Are they qualified? What skill and experience do they have? This is why the execution of a thorough forensic audit is being prevented. Too many skeletons are in Chase-Green’s and King’s closets.
